Plus Size Furniture is for Everyoneby: Michael O'Brien People come in all shapes and sizes. While it may seem quite unfair, there exists a not so subtle attitude against plus size folks. There is often a negative connotation that comes with the term plus size. Plus size can correctly be thought of as including folks who are big or tall. Media and culture is teeming with images of people who appear to be anything but plus size. The lines between what is considered normal and not so normal have never been sharper. Plus size furniture is for everyone, helping to blur the lines a bit.
There was a time when a man would buy a pair of pants and pay the same price regardless of the size. Now it is quite common to see men who need a bigger size pay more because they are buying what the store calls a plus size. The reason often given is that it takes more fabric to make a larger pair of pants. So by that logic, men’s pants should be sold by the pound. If a man has a thirty four inch waist he will pay the same price for pants as a man with a forty two inch waist. In contrast, a man with a forty six inch waist may be asked to pay more.
Many commercial airlines have notoriously reacted to plus sized customers in ways that fly in the face of accepted customer service best practices. At a time when airlines are trying to increase capacity, coach seating on the average jetliner has gotten smaller. Smaller seats mean more passengers per plane. As seats got smaller, plus sized folks have found themselves in some very awkward positions. Even people of average size complained about reduced seat and leg room. When confronted by plus size passengers, some airlines implemented policies requiring that plus size passengers pay for an extra seat.
Are these situations unfair? A case could be made either way but these are examples reflective of how some elements of society react to folks who are bigger than average. The broader issue seems to be that many business sectors are struggling with how to respond to changes in the marketplace.
While some industries have struggled with the issue, one industry has responded quite differently. The furniture industry has recognized the needs of plus size customers by introducing furniture which can be used and appreciated by everyone, including plus size customers. More than just an attempt to capitalize on a niche market opportunity, many manufacturers have created lines of furniture that are stylish, well built and suitable for use by anyone regardless of there their body type. Marketed as big and tall and plus size furniture, this is furniture that is designed for maximum comfort and long life.
A great example of furniture designed for everyone is the big man recliner. Big man recliners are, as the name implies, big. With seat pads as large as four square feet and strong steel mechanisms, big man recliners offer a high level of comfort for everyone, regardless of weight or body type. For a price comparable to a standard recliner, big man recliners are solidly built and designed to last for many years to come.
Other types of furniture of have redesigned not only with plus size folks in mind but with quality and comfort for everyone.
